Roses inspire with a rich and colorful flower. From the classic red rose to pretty shades in salmon or pink, nature has everything ready. Yellow, orange or purple roses are also not uncommon. There are even increasing numbers of blue or black roses in the shops. However, these are not complex new varieties, but humans have simply played a trick on nature, because roses can be dyed in just a few simple steps. You can even easily do this at home.

How can you dye roses?

In principle, many things are possible. First of all, the flower color should be fixed. Here you have to distinguish between single-colored and colored roses. The technology differs a bit here, but we'll get to that later.

Once the desired color has been determined, it is then necessary to decide on a method. Roses can e.g. dyed by dipping them in paint, spraying them with paint or soaking them up with paint. The latter method has become established and will therefore also be described below. When the rose gets an opportunity to soak up color, the most colorful specimens are created and the coloring of brightly colored roses can also be implemented.

By placing the rose in a container with colored water, the liquid gets into all parts of the plant and ultimately causes the petals to soak up and thus take on an intense and even color.

There are several ways to do this. All of the following means give satisfactory results. What is allowed is what you like:

❍ ink:

Ink has a strong hue and promises intense color results. Everyone can determine the intensity of the coloring themselves. Simply leave the rose in the color water until the desired shade is achieved. Ink has long not only been available in black or blue, but the selection remains limited.

❍ Food coloring / water color:

If you choose water or food coloring, you will be able to try out different colors. It is also interesting, for example, to create a nicely shaded flower head using different shades of one color. If you mix the water or food coloring, you can also dye several roses in different shades. This creates extraordinary bouquets for a variety of occasions.

Choose the right rose

If you want to color roses yourself, you will have a hard time choosing a naturally intensely colored rose. So a deep red rose can hardly change into a pastel-colored delicate blossom. It can then be colored black at most. If you play with the different colors and want to test the possibilities of this coloring technique, then it is best to choose white roses as the starting material. If white roses are not available, you can also switch to delicate pink flower heads.

For darker colors, yellow roses should also give satisfactory results. However, it will then probably take a correspondingly longer time to achieve the desired shade.

You need this for dyeing

  • white roses or very light shades of color
  • Food coloring, watercolor or ink
  • Glasses or vase with water / test tubes with rainbow coloring
  • knife
  • secateurs

❖ Step 1:

First of all you have to fill the provided vase or the glass about 3/4 with water.

❖ Step 2:

Now you will have to experiment a little until the desired color result is achieved. You shouldn't save on water color. If the desired color is not available in the paint box, you must mix it yourself.

You should also always use ink generously, unless you prefer a light coloring of the flower veins. This can seem quite appealing when using dark colors.

Ink cartridges can also be used. For a water glass you will have to use several to achieve an intense color result.

❖ Step 3:

Now you have to prepare the rose for coloring. It should always be a fresh and strong rose, which absorbs the color well. Furthermore, you have to cut the cut flowers correctly so that they absorb the color well. Therefore it is best to shorten the stem of the roses to a maximum length of 20 centimeters. Use a sharp knife to ensure that the cut edge does not fray. Cut the stem diagonally so that as much water as possible can be transported.

Always remove all leaves on the stem so that the liquid does not evaporate unnecessarily but is transported directly to the flower.

❖ Step 4:

Now place the prepared rose in the colored water. The stem should be completely surrounded by the liquid. A color change will then be visible after a few minutes. However, intensive coloring can only be achieved if you leave the rose in the colored water for a few hours. So now it's time to wait. Once the rose has taken on the desired color, all you have to do is put it back in a vase of clear water.

Rainbow roses are very special. After all, it is not seen every day that rose petals come in bright colors. The great thing: you can even create roses of this type at home! It is best to use strong roses, because with rainbow roses you have to cut the stem several times, which is very easy with strong flowers.

❖ Step 1:

Multi-colored roses are always real eye-catchers and at the same time raise some questions. How should it be possible that almost every petal has a different color? Very easily! You do not prepare a glass as described, but, according to the color requirements, the desired number of vessels. The principle still works quite well with two or three colors. If you want to experiment with other colors, it is better to use test tubes.

❖ Step 2:

Now cut the stem of the rose several times. The incisions should reach the middle of the stem and correspond to the number of prepared colored glasses. Each individual stem section is then always placed in a separate colored glass.

❖ Step 3:

Then place the rose in the first test tube with colored water. When the water is used up, it is refilled until the petals have taken on the desired color. It won't be long before you can watch the individual leaves change color.

❖ Step 4:

Then the rose comes up to the second incision in the next test tube with another color of your choice. And so on.

❖ Step 5:

Here too, when the desired color has been achieved, the stem section returns from the colored water to clear water.

This way, colored roses stay fresh for a long time

❁ You should always use fresh flowers so that you can enjoy the colored roses for as long as possible.

Zudem You should also not place the bouquet of roses in the blazing sun, because the sunlight quickly fades the flower colors.

❁ If you treat the roses with hairspray after dyeing and dry the flowers, you will enjoy the self-colored flower heads for a very long time. You can also preserve your self-colored roses with the help of a glycerin-water mixture.
