Caring for prunes - important things for watering, fertilizing and wintering


Sweet plums are a very special treat. The fruit is easy to cultivate, but requires a little care in terms of care for a rich harvest.

Sweet plums (Prunus domestica subsp. Italica) are round, sweet and juicy, but by no means difficult to cultivate. The fruit trees presumably from the Asian region are therefore increasingly to be found in our gardens and thrive particularly well in climatically favored regions. It is exciting to discover the old and particularly tasty varieties for yourself or to experiment with new varieties. If you want a plum harvest in late summer, the following care tips can help.

How to properly care for the plum

To water:

The plums need a lot of water immediately after planting. Compared to the other representatives in the orchard, the liquid requirement of prunes is very high. The plants should not dry out completely. In dry and hot summers, you should water the garden hose extensively. Following a rule of thumb, you should let the garden hose run for about an hour so that the soil is completely saturated with moisture.

" Tip: The noble plum prefers calcareous substrate. Therefore tap water can be poured without hesitation.

Fertilization should take place once a year, in spring and at the beginning of the growth phase. The fertilizer should mainly contain nitrogen, potash and phosphate. The proportion of nitrogen and potash can be around 10 grams per square meter. Phosphate should be around four grams.

" Tip: An additional enrichment of the soil with compost is recommended in spring and autumn. Particularly poor soils should be upgraded accordingly.

After harvest:

It is not without reason that the prunes taste best fresh from the tree. The fruit is not suitable for long storage and should be used as soon as possible after the harvest.

" Tip: After harvesting, prunes can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.

Because of their sweet and slightly sour taste, prunes are preferably eaten raw. Other uses include making compote or jam. Plums can also be used as a topping for fruit cakes or for the preparation of syrup.


Most varieties can be overwintered quite well and without additional protection. Especially the old varieties that have been native to Europe for centuries cope well with our climate.

" Tip: So that the winter sun does not attack the trees, it is advisable to whiten the trunks.

If the plum was planted in a bucket, it is less robust and should be protected in the cold season. The bottom of the planter should be covered with leaves or brushwood. To prevent the planter from freezing completely, it should be positioned on a wooden or polystyrene support. A protected location on a wall or house wall is an advantage.

Popular types of plum

The cultivation of plums is exciting because there are numerous species that enrich the picture in the orchard.

❍ Count Althann's reneklode

This is a very old and particularly robust variety. The prunes are also suitable for cultivation in regions with a harsher climate and severe frosts. The renekloden originally come from Bohemia. The yield is high and the fruits are green-yellow in color.

❍ Large green reindeer lode

The Great Green Reneclodes probably come from southern Europe and have also been cultivated for a long time. The green-yellow fruits taste best directly from the tree, but they can also be used very well as preserving fruit. The trees are vigorous and quite robust. The Scharka virus feared in prunes does not occur in this species.

❍ Oullins Reneklode

This plum was already known in France in the early 19th century. The plant has a strong growth and produces large, yellow fruits. The yellow flesh is sweet and spicy. The prunes can be harvested in August.

❍ Diaphane Reneklode

This very rare variety from France has fragrant flowers and green-yellow fruits with pink stripes. The flesh is tender and pleasantly soft. Can be harvested from the end of August.

H Uhink's Reneklode

This is an old and very rare variety that a plum grower cultivated in the late 19th century. Whoever owns this plum has a real rarity.

❍ Boddart's Reneklode

This variety comes from Belgium and has been grown since the mid-19th century. The plants develop remarkably large fruits, but require a lot of warmth and protected locations.

❍ Moissac Reneklode

This old variety comes from southwestern France and is now also grown in California. The fruits appear numerous and ripen earlier than the Great Green Reneclode. This noble plum is also distilled as schnapps in the Dordone.
